New drugs warning for Warrington

A WARNING has gone out about dangerous new drugs circulating in the Warrington area which can have dangerous side effects and devastating consequences.
The borough council’s public health team say they strongly advise anyone  not to try the new NPS – new psychoactive substances – drugs.
Director of public health Dr Rita Robertson (pictured) said: “Drugs have a big effect on people’s health and wellbeing and we would strongly advice not to take any illegal drugs or ‘legal highs’ as they all come with great risk.
“Everyone needs to remember that NPS are not quality controlled and are therefore not safe.
“The type and dose will differ from packet to packet, even if it is the same brand and effects will vary from person to person.
“To get a ‘high’ an active dose, in some instances, the size of a matchstick head is all that is needed of the NPS, which people do not realise and often use more.”
Dr Robertson says if anyone has taken the drug and suffers from profuse sweating, a racing heart beat, extreme muscle tension, delirious ranting or very high body temperature they should immediately dial 999.
The casualty should be put in the recovery position and medical assistance should be sought immediately.
Anyone concerned about their drug or alcohol use, or that of someone they know, should contact CRI Pathways to Recovery for free and confidential advice or information on 01925 415176, out of hours helpline: 07919558644 or visit www.warrington.gov.uk/drugs
