A KIND hearted firefighter, who raffled an ipad he won in a competition, has raised vital money for two cancer charities.

Graham Davies is a Watch Manager at Warrington Fire Station and entered the Institute of Fire Engineering (IFE) Lecturette competition along with colleagues.

To win the prize staff were required to give a presentation to guest judges, managers and staff on a fire related subject. Graham won the competition and the prize of ipad, which was donated by the Cheshire Branch of the IFE.

The device was later raffled off by Graham amongst colleagues and friends. The raffle raised £920 for two charities very mean a lot to Graham and his wife Nadine. These are Breast Cancer Care and Christie Hospital in Manchester.

Graham said: “I entered the 2015 Lecturette Completion through work. This was with the intention that if I won then I would raffle the prize and donate any money to charity.

“In September last year my wife, Nadine, was diagnosed with breast cancer at 44. This was a huge blow to all of us especially as she had just ran the Warrington Half Marathon in her fastest time.

“We were to realise that breast cancer is totally indiscriminate and it can happen to someone’s mother, sister, wife or daughter, regardless of how fit and healthy they think they are.”

As a way of raising awareness and money the couple decided to do something for charity.

One of the beneficiary’s was Breast Cancer Care which is a national charity that provides research and help to families affected by this disease.

Graham’s wife is being treated at Christie Hospital in Manchester which is their other chosen charity. The couple found this hospital to be at the forefront in breast cancer treatment and research into stopping or treating the disease. Thanks to this research someone who was diagnosed two years ago may be on a different treatment regime today due to new methods, drugs and research.

Graham added: “In total we raised £920 which will go to the two charities, along with further money raised by my wife and I when we do the Manchester 10 k in May.

“On behalf of my wife and I, I would like to thank everyone who bought a ticket and helped us in raising the money.”

Cheshire Fire Chief Paul Hancock carried out the draw and the prize was won by a local Warrington woman, Angela Bealey.
