Passenger could have been killed!

A councillor fears it will only be a matter of time before someone is

killed due to the poor conditions of roads in outlying villages in

Warrington.
Culcheth Councillor Paul Campbell (pictured right) says he has yet again been contacted by a resident complaining about the state of the roads around the villages of Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft.
On the latest occasion the resident and her passenger friend were returning to Culcheth via Croft after work.
While driving along Smithy Brow near Croft, a roadside grate which was obviously in a dislodged state shot upwards as the wheel of her car passed over it. The grate then struck the passenger side of her car causing an estimated £1,300 damage .The woman passenger told Cllr Campbell that if the grate had gone a little higher it could have smashed the window where she was seated and that the force was such that she felt lucky to be alive.
The owner of the car contacted Warrington Borough Council claiming damages but was told by their insurers that the Council did not accept any negligence as the grate in particular had been checked in May and found to be ok. The resident noticed that the day after she complained the council were out at the scene repairing the road and grate.
Cllr Campbell said: “To say the resident is angry is an understatement. She feels as I do that the Council is avoiding its responsibilities and that there appears to be a very obvious case of negligence on the Councils behalf. I have advised the resident to seek legal advice and to appeal the Councils decision. The fact that I and many other residents and Councillors have been warning the Borough Council regarding the state of the roads in this area seems to be totally ignored. I am asking that the Council Highways Department take these complaints more seriously and that a special task force be set up involving local Parish Councils to deal with the issue as a matter of urgency.”

  1. This administration and those before it have always had a dismissive attitude towards damage to cars caused by poorly maintained roads in the town. The proliferation of speed humps around the town has been causing damage to car suspension drop links for years as well as underside damage to exhausts, engines and gearboxes due to the height of some of these things. Just drive down Lilford Avenue in Bewsey and you will see quite possibly the most scuffed bump of them all…. because it is fitted in a dip in the road which means most cars “bottom out” on it regardless of the speed they are travelling……Of course the council are responsible for this damage to cars but they are side-stepping claims hoping that people will just give up and claim on their own insurances
