WARRINGTON Borough Council has “written off” £115,267.69 as unrecoverable debts covering the period Apil 16 to September 6 this year.
Nearly £93,000 relates to Social Services debts and £55,211.94 to housing benefit overpayments.
A report to the council’s audit and corporate governance committee points out that on an annual basis the council collects £86 million in council tax, £108 million in business rates, £58 million in miscellaneous income and £2.07 million in housing benefit overpayments.
The benefits and exchequer service is responsible for the billing, collection and recovery of most of the council’s income and its collection performance is “extremely good”, the report states.
“However, there are occasions where we are unable to pursue an outstanding debt any further.
“This could occur for a number of reasons, such as the person owing the debt could have died or has left the borough without trace, or the debt is no longer economically viable to pursue.”
Debts are only written off when all avenues of recovery have been exhausted, the report stresses.
