Kids swap class for car workshop

YOUNGSTERS from Newchurch Primary School, Culcheth, swapped the classroom for a busy workshop to join Motor Vehicle Apprentices at Warrington Collegiate for a day.
The children have been studying transport and finding out all about different cars from how they work to how to build, maintain and repair them in a fun-filled project, Fast and Furious.
The children enjoyed a variety of activities including a tour of the state of the art facilities which boasts a tyre centre, vehicle inspection area, numerous ramps, and a diagnostics area with the latest equipment including training rigs to teach many of the latest technologies used in the automotive industry.
Teacher Laura Gilberts said: “This was a fantastic opportunity to inspire the children to think about their future careers as well as getting behind the scenes in a real working garage. The apprentices have been wonderful, showing the children just what’s involved in getting a car on the road from changing the tyres to how the engine works as well as actually sitting in a car and trying out the pedals and steering for themselves.”
One of the highlights of the visit was the go-kart which had already been seen in action at the school when the Collegiate’s Curriculum Director for Motor Vehicle, Pete Jones, dropped in to visit the students to invite them to visit the college.
Pupil, Sian Taylor, enjoyed her college experience. She said: “I learnt that you have to put tyre soap on the tyres so you don’t damage it when you are putting it back on. I liked making the plastic engines with Pete and walking under the cars to see what parts it was made of!
Fellow pupil, Sam Seddon added: “I learnt about some of the parts underneath the car and how to take a wheel and tyre off. I also learnt how to start to build a consumption engine. The apprentices are very talented and inspiring!”
