WARRINGTON Borough Council has served a notice on the operators of the giant Arpley landfill site requiring them to cease the tipping of waste.
The notice requires FCC Environment to comply within 60 days, starting from the day it was served – Thursday.
A council spokesperson said: “The notice requires the developer to ‘Cease waste disposal operations other than the import and disposal of inert fill materials where carried out in strict accordance with a restoration scheme approved under Condition 3 of planning permission reference number 85/17988’.
“The compliance period for the notice is 60 days beginning with the day on which the notice was served.”
Town Hall chiefs decided to serve the notice after becoming aware that tipping was still going on at the tip despite planning consent running out last Sunday.
Nearby residents, who have had to put up with heavy lorries pounding the roads near their homes for more than 20 years, said they were furious that waste was still being imported to the controversial site.
They said they had endured noise, vibrations, dust, smells and road safety hazards on a daily basis for far too long.
The borough council refused an application to extend the life of the tip by 12 years in January.
In July, tip operators FCC Environment lodged an appeal and this is due to be held in February
Meanwhile last week the council received a further planning application
from the operator seeking to extend the life of the tip for a further five years.
The company’s applications and the subsequent appeal are being opposed by all the political parties and residents of Sankey Bridges and Saxon Park.
More than 6,000 people have signed a petition objecting to any extension to the tip’s life.
