Road closure will last six weeks

AN important canal-side road will be closed to traffic for six weeks as major work to keep the taps flowing for thousands of Warrington people moves into its next phase.
A section of Ellesmere Road, in Stockton Heath, will be closed from Monday September 30 so that engineers can get access to pipes 20 metres below the Manchester Ship Canal.
Water company project co-ordinator Bob Dykes apologised for the inevitable inconvenience the closure would cause.
He said: “We know this will be a pain. Diversions will be in place and we will complete this part of our work as quickly as we can.
“Replacing the water mains under the canal is vital for people and businesses across Warrington because the pipes are showing their age and might otherwise corrode and burst. That’s something no-one wants.
“We are doing our best to keep Ellesmere Road open most of the time, but there are certain times like this when we need to shut it completely so we can work safely.
“We want to let people know that it’s only for a short while and thank them for bearing with us.”
United Utilities £2.5m scheme in Warrington started in May and is expected to take until next summer.
Ellesmere Road will be temporarily closed from the junction with London Road to outside St Thomas’ Church Hall. The diversion route will take people along Brackley Street and Egerton Street.
Engineers expect to be able to re-open the road in mid-November, when it will revert to the temporary
single lane closure and traffic lights which have been in operation over the summer.
