SHOPKEEPERS in Warrington are resigned to a quieter than usual day today as a result of the second one-day strike by the town’s bus drivers.
The strike began at one minute after midnight – and if it has a similar impact as the first stoppage, on Friday September 13 it will mean many people will stay away from the town centre.
Free parking is being offered on the Golden Square multi-storey car park in case more people than usual travel into town by car.
The strike is the second of a planned series of seven and is over a pay dispute.
Employers Network Warrington say they are extremely disappointed at the stance their staff are taking in view of the fact that the pay freeze which has caused the dispute is the first in 16 years.
The five remaining strikes are planned for next Sunday, September 29, Monday, October 7, Tuesday, October 15, Wednesday, October 23 and Thursday, October 31.
Network Warrington’s website – www.networkwarrington.co.uk – is being updated regularly to notify the travelling public of the latest situation.
The bus workers are members of the Unite union.
They have apologised to the public for any inconvenience the strikes cause.
A spokesman said the company had never engaged with them on the pay issue.
“They say they haven’t got any money – but it’s like a state secret getting any answers from them about the company’s finances.”
