Sexual awareness week

WARRINGTON’S public health team is backing National Sexual Health Awareness Week – and raising awareness of the services available in the borough.
The national campaign “XES-We can’t go backwards” is a rally call to ensure everyone has access to information and treatment when they need it so they can enjoy happy and healthy relationships.
The Warrington Centre for Sexual Health opened earlier this year in Bath Street and brought a number of services for adults including family planning, reproductive heath and GUM services (genitourinary medicine) all under one roof.
The one stop shop launched in May has also proved to be a popular and valuable service.
Since the centre opened the team have had a busy first three months with the Genito Urinary Medicine service exceeding its target by seeing more than 1,800 people.
There is a dedicated service at The Gateway, in Sankey Street, which offers young people aged 19 and under a confidential sexual health drop-in service. The Youth Advice Shop is a team of doctors, nurses and youth workers who work closely together to help support teenagers on contraception, sexual health testing and relationships.
There is also a local initiative called ‘C-card scheme’ which offers young people access at 20 sites across Warrington to free condoms, along with advice and support from trained staff so they can make informed choices about relationships and their sexual health.
Cllr Pat Wright, the borough council’s lead member for health, wellbeing and adult services, said: “The public health team has made great progress in providing a variety of different ways of making services to help and support the public readily available to all sectors of our community – and they are enjoying much success.
“We need to continue to stamp out the stigma surrounding sexual health services and continue to promote the message that we want people to view looking after their sexual health as routine as visiting the dentist or having their eyes tested.”
