Council block on payday loan websites

WARRINGTON Borough Council is planning to block payday loan websites from all council computers.
A motion is to be put to Monday’s meeting of the council asking members to support the blocking – including computers available for public use in the Contact Centre and libraries.
Council leader Terry O’Neill is moving the proposal and finance chief Cllr Russ Bowden is to second it.
They say the council is committed to working with key partners in Warrington to support residents who are struggling to cope in tough economic times.
“We must protect people – particularly the most vulnerable in our communities – from payday loan companies that seek to exploit their position and often lead them into a spiral of debt.
“This council resolves to block access to payday loan websites from all council computers, including those of our own staff and those provided for public use in the Contact Centre and libraries.”

  1. So, the council is to block payday loan websites from council staff’s computers, because it wants to protect people from the “most vulnerable communities”!

Are we to assume from this that Town Hall white collar staff come from vulnerable communities? Not according to the pay rises we have heard about recently!

  2. I hope this ban extends to the “innovative solution for bringing down some in Longford’s digital barriers when they experience the wonders of internet in their own home, without having to purchase a computer or pay for broadband access”.
