Now it's single seater taxis!

TAXIS with seating for just one passenger may soon be on the roads of Warrington.
The borough council has been approached by a local man who wants them to issue Hackney licenses to Mercedes “Smart” cars which have seating for the driver and one passenger.
Keith Bate, of Woolston, says he wants to operate a fleet of the tiny cars, together with “normal” sized vehicles.
Currently there are 149 Hackney Carriage licenses in operation in Warrington – consisting of four seat saloons, hatchbacks and estate cars, five, six, seven and eight seat people carriers and eight seat mini-buses
But Mr Bate claims 60 per cent of all taxi journeys are undertaken by single travellers.
If his Warrington operation gets under way it will be only the second in the country. One other is already operating in Nottinghamshire.
The cars would have low emissions, lower operating costs, zero road tax and lower insurance rates as well as achieving more than 80mpg.
Mr Bate says this would mean lower fares for their customers. Currently, the other service in Nottinghamshire operates 20 per cent cheaper than its conventional competitors
At the same time it will have superior accessibility and space when compared with a conventional car, will be particularly suitable for the elderly or infirm and will carry two full-sized suitcases in the boot.
Each Smart car added to his fleet will potentially provide 2.5 new jobs he claims
His application will be considered by the borough council’s licensing committee tomorrow (Tuesday)
