A WOMAN claimed benefits as a single person when she was in fact married and living with her husband, magistrates heard at Warrington.
Tanya Devey, 25, of Honister Avenue, Orford, Warrington pleaded guilty to two offences of benefit fraud.
She was given a 12 month community order, ordered to do 100 hours unpaid work, pay £350 costs and repay £7,554 she had wrongly received.
The court was told Devey defrauded Warrington Borough council of £6,403 housing benefit and £1,151 council tax benefit.
After the hearing, Adrian Webster, the council’s benefits and exchequer services manager, said: “All benefit theft is crime. There are no exceptions and that is why the council is determined to bring fraudsters to justice.”
