Council's anti-litter campaign

WARRINGTON Borough Council will next week launch an anti-litter campaign in the town centre – and has issued a firm warning to anyone who drops cigarette butts or other litter.
The campaign will involve council enforcement officers and police community support officers intensively patrolling the town centre for a fortnight.
Anyone found dropping litter will be liable for a fixed-penalty notice. If a fixed penalty notice of £50 is not paid within 10 days, the penalty increases to £75 – and if this isn’t paid within 14 days of the original offence, offenders will be summoned to appear at the magistrates’ court where they may be liable for fines of up to £2,500.
Last year when the council ran a similar campaign, some 70 fixed penalty notices were issued, and several people were summoned to appear before magistrates.
A council spokesperson said: “The message from the council is this: Think before you mess up our streets. Put your litter – all your litter – in the bin. And if you don’t, your carelessly dropped cigarette-butt or other litter could cost you a £50 on-the-spot fine.
“What we want is a clean and attractive town that we can all feel proud of. What we don’t want is to have to fine people for spoiling it.”
The campaign will run for a fortnight from Monday 2 September.

  1. What about dog fouling then, where I live in Orford this is a constant problem Council does'nt care despite promises to prosecute offenders, friend of mine lives in Gorsey Lane and thats just as bad.

Sounds like Councils promises are all hot air

  2. The council will target dog fouling offenders if people give them good intel, they wont send an officer to walk the streets on the off chance of stumbling across someone letting there dogs foul, i passed some intel and the culpret was caught by them ! Just email any intel to [email protected]

  3. We live in a fling and forget society, where litter has regrettably become part of the scenery. The Council should be complimented for introducing it. However, the campaign should be extended to cover the whole borough. Policing it would be a problem I know but the possibility of a knowing you might just get a hefty fine for littering our villages and local shopping centres might cause people to think before they chuck their litter where ever they like.

  4. Dog foulings done in the early hours and when it’s dark. The only evidence is the poo thats left for people to step in and take on their shoes to the homes they live in.

Do’nt you work for the council Peter Pan?if so give your real name like I have

  5. Malcolm I dont work for the local authority but i have worked closely with them to help tidy my area up with the love where you live campaign that was fantastic, As you stated that you used to work for the council on previous posts you should know that good quality intel is what is needed to catch dog foulers as they like you say do it in the cover of dark where litterers do it all the time like its the norm ! Shouldnt we be looking to pat the council on the back for doing something positive in these times of budget cutting etc things like litter, dog fouling and fly-tipping could easily be put in the savings pot and just ignored !
