Near riot after umpiring decision

TITLE-chasing Grappenhall lost by the narrowest of margins after skipper Richard Green called back a batsman who had been given out in a controversial umpiring decision.
Green’s gesture defused a potentially ugly situation at the end of a keenly contested Vivio Cheshire County League match at Nantwich.
But it also cost Grappenhall victory over the league champions.
Grappenhall had batted first and reached 259-8 – a challenging target for the home side.
Nantwich were 211-9 with a win for Grappers very much on the cards. But the last pair took on the bowlers and with a couple of overs to go the result was still in the balance.
Aussie paceman Josh McClelland then bowled one of the last pair – with a no ball.
The batsman, not hearing the umpire’s call, left his crease to congratulate the bowler.
He suddenly realised he was not out – and out of his ground.
Grappenhall wicket keeper Liam Parkinson, entirely within the laws of cricket, pulled out one of the stumps with the ball in his hand, effectively running the batsman out.
The umpires conferred – and gave the batsman out.
This triggered a near-riot among the home side and some rather “beery” supporters.
It was then that Green – a former Lancashire player – decided to call back the batsman.
Nantwich batted on – and won the match with two balls to spare.
Luke McCoy had earlier top scored for Grappenhall with a patient 75 and McClelland hit an unbeaten 68.
Gaz Burns took 5-77 and Jack Critchley 3-33.
Grappenhall 2nd scraped an exciting one wicket victory over Nantwich at Broad Lane.
The visitors were asked to bat first and at 70-7 it seemed to have been a good decision. But the ninth wicket added 100 and Nantwich finished on 200.
Grappenhall struggled for runs but a fine 91 from Ian Wright, with some good support from Matt Titchard, 30 took them within sight of victory and the last pair managed to edge to victory.
The third XI match at Toft was rained off with the home side on 88-1.
Warrington coasted to a nine wicket win over Stockport Georgians after bowling them out for 93. Kyle Adams took 4-35, Sim Hewitt 2-15 and Paul Farrar 2-2.
Chris Kirby, 39 not out and James Hughes, 40 not out took Warrington to a match-winning 95-1
In the TACS Partnership Cheshire League, Lymm Oughtrington Park registered an eight wicket win over Kingsley, after bowling them out for 83.
B Phillips hit 39 and R Young 27 not out as Lymm replied with 84-2.
The Cheshire Alliance “derby” game between Appleton and Stretton at Lyons Lane ended in a one wicket victory for Appleton.
Stretton were bowled out for 98, Danny Oliver taking 6-16 and Ed Pugh 3-31.
Appleton found runs hard to get but Sam Swift’s unbeaten 27 took them to 100-9.
Marcus Pepper top scored with 22 when Appleton 3rd were bowled out for 85 by Port Sunlight – after being 82-4.
It was never enough and the visitors coasted to victory at 86-2.
Glazebury managed to chalk up another win – by the narrowest of margins.
Batting first against Wilmslow at Hurst Lane, they were bowled out for 101, Jack Warhurst top scoring with 32.
Wilmslow struggled against the bowling of Jon Gibbons 3-22, Tom Wilkinson 3-22 and Chris Ayre 3-39 and were dismissed for 100 in a nail-biting finish.
Glazebury 2nd were held to a draw against Rylands.
Sam Murphy hit 50 to enable Glazebury to reach 190. Rylands replied with 157-9, Phil Mansfield hitting 66. Skipper David Nicholson took 7-45 for Glazebury.
Stretton 2nd went down by six wickets against Audlem.
Batting first, Stretton managed to reach 130-8, J Mistry 46. The visitors replied with 131-4, despite a good return by J Large who took 4-24.
