A WOMAN who falsely claimed more than £31,000 benefit was handed a suspended prison sentence by magistrates at Warrington.
Sally Sanderson-Newall, aged 34, of Weaver Road, Culcheth pleaded guilty to benefit fraud.
The court heard she had claimed benefits as a single person when she was, in fact, living with her partner.
Between January 2009 and July last year she falsely claimed £20,080 housing benefit and £2,584 council tax benefit from the borough council and £9,008 income support from the Department for Work and Pensions – a total of £31,672.
She was sentenced to eight weeks in prison, suspended for one year, tagged, given an 8pm-7am curfew for 12 weeks and ordered to repay the money.
After the hearing, Adrian Webster, the council’s benefits manager, said: “Deliberately withholding information that affects your claim is stealing. That’s why we are targeting benefit thieves.
“We’re closing in on benefit thieves with every means at our disposal.”
Anyone who suspects someone is fraudulently claiming benefits to which they are not entitled is asked to call the council’s confidential benefit fraud hotline on 01925 442282/442283 or email [email protected].
