A TWENTY20 cup competition provided a rare “derby” between Warrington and Grappenhall – and ended in victory for Grappers.
Batting first at Walton Lea, they were all out for 129, Adam Roylance top scoring with 47 and Paul Farrar, 4-32, proving the most effective of Warrington’s bowlers.
Warrington replied with 101-6, Sam Baxter hitting 36 not out and Brendan Morris 28.
But in the Vivio Cheshire County League, Grappenhall got a taste of how tough life can be in the Premier Division when they went down by six wickets against Marple despite hitting an impressive 259-6.
Aussie Josh McClelland top scored with 68 not out at Grappers batted first at Broad Lane, and there was good support from Liam Parkinson, 42 not out.
But the target was not enough to trouble the Marple batsmen and they raced to 261-4, Gas Burns, with 2-59, being the most successful of Grappenhall’s bowlers.
Grappenhall 3rd enjoyed a good win over Toft at Broad Lane.
Batting first, Grappers reached 204-9, Albert Pennington 65 and Rob Slater 38. Toft never looked like getting the runs and were bowled out for 147, Sean Phillips taking 4-23.
Warrington also went down in their league game, being dismissed for a disappointing 100 at Alvanley, where the home side went to to win with 102-3.
Warrington 2nd strolled to a nine wicket victory over Oulton Park, who batted first and were dismissed for 136. Veteran seamer Paul Agar took 3-16, Ryan Swart 2-18, Ashley Scholes 2-20 and Chai Gadepalli 2-14. Warrington replied with 138-1, Andy Kirby 61 not out, Malcolm Agar 48 not out and Scholes 22.
At Timperley, Warrington 4th took a drubbing when they were tumbled out for 93, Mansoor Naseem 29 and Les Connolly, 20 after the home side had declared on 222-8. Bruce Jardine returned the best bowling figures with 2-33.
The Cheshire Alliance “derby” game between Rylands and Glazebury ended in a draw – but with Glazebury hanging on grimly with the last pair at the wicket.
Rylands totalled 269, opener Eddie Platt hitting 73 and Graeme Rowlands a fine 104. Tom Wilkinson bowled well for Glazebury to finish with 6-62.
Glazebury’s main run-getters were Andrew Calvert, 21, Chris Lord, 24 and Dave Mason 25, but in truth they were never in the hunt. Richard Buck took 6-33 for Rylands.
Appleton picked up a much-beeded victory at Stalybridge St Pauls were the home side were dismissed for 107. Edward Pugh took 5-31 and Will Ralston 2-14. Appleton replied with 108-8, but owned much to Aamir Rashid’s 61 as only one other batsman, Rick Clarke, with 11, reached double figures.
At Lyons Lane, Appleton 2nd went down heavily against Hartford after being dismissed for 96 and see the visitors race to 97-1.
But Appleton 3rd inflicted a humiliating defeat on Audlem after batting first and reaching a modest 124, Martin Cooper 46. Audlem’s batsmen had no answer to the bowling of Danny Oliver, 3-3 and Q. Ahmed, 3-5 and crashed out for a mere 28.
