Police chief seeks young ambassador

POLICE and Crime Commissioner John Dwyer is looking to appoint a youth ambassador to work with young people affected by poverty in Warrington.
Final preparations for the new post are being made and it is hoped by summer someone will be appointed to work across Cheshire.
Figures from the End Child Poverty campaign paint a stark picture for young people in the county. In Warrington 15 per cent of youngsters are affected.
On average throughout the UK, one in five (20.2 per cent), of children are classified as below the Poverty Line. In Cheshire overall the picture is not as severe as in other areas, but there are 13 wards where more than one in every three children live in poverty.
Mr Dwyer said: “Cheshire is a diverse county renowned for its more affluent areas but I will ensure that the youth ambassador, that I intend to appoint by summer, will be identifying and working closely with these young people and I will ensure that there continues to be a focus on vulnerable young people by the constabulary.
“I am currently seeking the views of the public about the role of the youth ambassador and a short survey is available on my website should people wish to comment.”
The report shows that poverty in childhood affects a child’s future life chances. More than half of parents in poverty say they have cut back on food with a quarter saying they have skipped meals in the past year.
Parents in poverty reported problems such as children not having new shoes or a warm coat and missing out on school trips.
