TRAFFIC ground to a standstill in many parts of Warrington this morning as icy road and snow made driving conditions treacherous.
A number of accidents exacerbated the situation – with one near Brian Bevan Island causing gridlock.
Traffic in Chester Road and Knutsford Road Grappenhall came to a virtual standstill as motorists struggled to get into Warrington for work.
Outward bound traffic also piled up – apparently due to a accident on the A556 at Bucklow Hill.
The AA reported heavy congestion on the A49 in Newton Road, Winwick Road and Lythgoes Lane, Warrington.
Police advised drivers to delay their journeys if possible or to avoid the Warrington area altogether.
Traffic on the M56, the M62 and the M6 was heavier than usual.
Some drivers gave up trying to get into Warrington and returned home.
Forecasters offered some hope that the weather would get warmer and rain would arrive to clear away the slush.
