Arpley tip plan thrown out

PLANNING chiefs have thrown out the controversial application to extend the life of Warrington’s giant Arpley landfill site.
The borough council’s development management committee unanimously rejected the application at a special meeting at the Parr Hall.
More than 100 members of the public cheered as the decision was announced.
Applicants Waste Recycling Group tried to get the meeting adjourned on a technical point, claiming proper procedures has not been followed.
But the committee decided to carry on – and wasted little time in refusing planning consent in line with officers’ recommendations.
Political opponents were united.
Warrington South MP David Mowat, Conservative and his Labour opponent at the last General Election Nick Bent both opposed the application.
Liberal Democrat councillors were outspoken in condemning the proposals, which would have seen the tip continuing to operate until 2025.
Now the tip will have to close in October – unless the company wins the appeal which is almost certain to follow later this summer.
