Gas supplies restored

GAS supplies have now been restored to the vast majority of homes at Latchford, Warrington, following the incident on Friday which led to about l,400 homes and businesses losing their supply.
A spokeswoman for National Grid said today that engineers had worked over the weekend to restore supplies – cut off when an eight inch diameter supply pipe was severed by workmen carrying out flood defence works on Knutsford Road.
She said: “The only properties which are still without a supply are those where we have been unable to get access.
“Some people may have been away for the weekend.
“In these cases we have left a letter asking them to contact us as soon as they return and we still have engineers on standby waiting to deal with these properties as soon as possible.”
National Grid supplied fan heaters and electric hot plates to affected homes during the outage.
An incident room was set up at St James’ Primary School, in Old Road. But this has now been closed.
To restore supplies engineers needed to visit all the properties affected twice, once to safely turn off the gas supply at the meter and then again to turn the gas back on.
Anyone returning home is advised not to attempt to reconnect supplies themselves but to await a visit from an engineer.
