Lymm bounce back

A tough start to their season’s National League Three North campaign handed Lymm their second successive away game as they ran out comfortable 15-49 winners at Birkenhead Park.
Following last week’s narrow defeat at Waterloo, Lymm faced Park, another club with long and proud traditions.
Lymm showed great promise and intentions and lost narrowly but at Park the promise changed to an impressive cohesive display of fifteen man rugby. In the opening minutes Lymm conceded a try when naively, in anticipation of the referee’s whistle, both teams stopped playing, with the exception of the scorer.
In response Lymm surged into the Park half in an attack combining forwards and backs to be rewarded by a well struck Tom Smith penalty.
Lead by skipper Oli Higginson breaking the line and winger McEvoy’s strong running, a Lymm score looked inevitable but Park added a penalty against the run of play. Matt Delaney lead the response with a strong run towards the Park line for a try by Tom Bray and a Tom Smith conversion. Smith landed another try and conversion just before half time to give Lymm a 17 – 8 half time lead.
From the restart Lymm went deep into Park territory and excellent handling and determined running put scrum half Gaz Davies over for his debut Lymm try followed by another Smith conversion (24 – 8). Strong running by full back David Williamson then brought a try from powerful scrummaging for No. 8 Adam Bray (32 – 8). The Lymm backs then combined brilliantly to put in Williamson at the corner. The forwards were soon rewarded for a dynamic ruck giving Jordan Widdrington a rare but well-deserved try (42 – 8). A Matt Floyd try and Smith conversion completed Lymm’s excellent scoring performance but a last minute lapse handed Park 7 consolation points.

LYMM: David Williamson, Michael Floyd, Matt Delaney, Tom Smith, Luke Emmitt, Richard McEvoy, Tom Bray, Gaz Davies, Oli Higginson, Alex Isherwood, Adam Bray, Oliver Giles, Tom Darbyshire, Jordan Widdrington, Peter Allen, John Brotherton, Tim Oakes, Nick Ashton.
