Wizards win shows character

WARRINGTON Wizards assistant coach Paul Alcock praised his side’s mental attitude to fight back against St Albans Centurions.
The Wizards defeated the Centurions 40-22, but trailed 14-0 at the start of the game, then after reducing the deficit the Wizards went eight points behind at 20-12.
Alcock said: “I thought we produced a win that was full of character, especially considering that we were without six regular players.
“There was plenty of effort from the boys to get themselves back into the game following a slow start that saw us struggle to adapt to the weather and to get to the end of our sets.”
Alcock singled out three players after their performances brought the Wizards back into the game. He also paid tribute to the team’s replacements who added fire power to the side who were struggling in the opening stages.
Alcock said: “Some of our senior players led from the front especially Warren Ayres who produced a superb eighty minute performance at hooker. Ryan Jones probably had his best game in a Wizards shirt with some strong running and tough defence, and Mike Rosson was a tower of strength on his return from injury. The impact from our four substitutes was there for all to see with their energy and aggression and this really lifted the team.
“Once we got a hold of the game and composed ourselves we played with some real quality and I was especially delighted with our defensive effort as we managed to ‘nil’ St Albans in the second half.”
Warrington Wizards travel to Kippax Knights in Conference Three on Saturday, July 21. Kick off is 2.30pm and the coach leaves The Village Hotel at 11.15am for any supporters wishing to travel. Please contact Nikki Whalley on 07889 170895 to secure your place.
