THIEVES ruined Jubilee celebrations for many people at Lymm – by targeting lead on the roof of the 150-year-old St Mary’s Parish Church.
The “monsoon” rain which affected much of the country during the Jubilee week poured through the damaged roof of the picturesque church.
The choir vestry was awash as rain poured in through the roof and soaked into the structure and floor. Water cascaded down a staircase.
Officers of the church were horrified at the chaos confronting them and spent hours trying to stem the flooding and clear up the mess.
It is believed that the theft occurred between Monday, June 4 and Thursday, June 7.
The lead was security-marked, following a previous theft, but the devastation t was more severe because of the torrential rain which fell.
Church officers say the stolen lead will probably only fetch £50 to £100 – but the resulting damage could cost many thousands of pounds to repair.
