WARRINGTON Town continued their pre-season build up with a 0-1 win at West Cheshire League outfit Newton as new striker Jamie Henders was again on target.
Town welcomed back regular full back Mike Duffy and goalkeeper Paul Pritchard into the starting line up after both players missed the weekends trip to Burscough.
Town started the brighter of the two sides, with Duffy looking dangerous on his marauding runs down the right flank, and recent signing Henders causing the home defence problems. It was no surprise when Town took the lead just before the half hour mark, when Henders nipped in to collect a pass, round the keeper and slot home from a tight angle, despite the best efforts of the two retreating Newton defenders. The half time introduction of Sam Finley from the bench gave Town fresh impetus going forward, and along with a number of triallists in the starting line up, kept Town pushing forward. Town almost went two goals up half way through the second half, when Finley’s innocuous looking shot rebounded off the upright, with the Newton keeper well beaten. Newton’s ex Town forward Dave Thompson was the biggest threat for the home side, but Pritchard was pretty much untroubled through the night. Overall, this was a good run out for Town, against a side who never gave up, and kept going until the end.
Meanwhile Warrington have been drawn away from home in the preliminary round of the Cheshire Cup and face a trip to near neighbours Runcorn Linnets on Tuesday September 20 kick off 7.45pm.
