Stamp out cigarette litter

TOWN Hall bosses at Warrington are asking people to respect the town centre – by not dropping cigarette butts.
Wednesday (March 9) is National No Smoking Day and is being used to highlight the extent of the cigarette litter problem.
It will be the first part of an important initiative by the borough council and partners to help people to stop smoking and to look at ways of tackling littering in Warrington town centre.
Cllr Mike Biggin, the council’s executive member for climate change and public protection, said: “Litter is a problem in our town centre. This new campaign is designed to stamp out the issue of discarded cigarette butts which account for a high proportion of litter in town centres across the UK.
“We hope that businesses and visitors to our town centre will join us in making our streets cleaner and tidier.
“It is important that people realise that it is an offence to drop litter and that enforcement action will be taken against those people who continue to drop cigarette litter”.
Cigarette butts leak toxins that contaminate water and harm marine life and the environment. Cigarette filters have been found in the stomachs of fish, birds, whales and other marine creatures, who mistake them for food. They are sometimes eaten by young children.
Every day, smokers in the UK throw about about 200 million butts which make up 70-90 per cent of all town centre litter.
Cost of removing it is around £370 million.

  1. what a load of “tripe” shock tactics ….AGGH this bugs me, they play us like we are thick !

The figure ” 70-90 per cent of all town centre litter.” is that weight, I think not!

its quantity, tiny little fag buts compared to discarded sofas !,

its in the same way 2/3rds of the worlds surface could be water…or with their twist logic to make a point. Only 113 seas and oceans exist in the world however since there are estimated 470,000 elephants then elephant urine accounts for 469887 bodies of water worldwide daily and therefore elephants are responsible for 99% of all the earths water.

one more question…what was the figure before the smoking ban?
