Video shows life in a refuge

CHESHIRE Police have released a video show what life is like in a refuge – a place of safety for those who have suffered violence, threats or abuse from someone close to them.
The video – which can be seen on the police website www.cheshire.police.uk – is part of a campaign to raise awareness of domestic abuse.
It is designed to show victims of abuse the sort of support available to them in the local community. It was filmed inside a Cheshire refuge.
There are separate refuges for men and women across the county – including Warrington – and there is no age limit for those seeking refuge. It doesn’t matter whether they are seeking refuge from a violent husband, wife, partner or other relative.
Most refuges are ordinary houses and many have disabled access. Residents can have their own room, or one to share with children. There will be a kitchen, bathroom and communal living area.
They can supply clothing, toiletries, tins of food and even help with arrangements for pets.
Other residents in the refuge can provide emotional support and friendship.
Staff are on hand 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help. They can offer advice and support on a range of issues including benefits, housing, counseling and schools and nursery places for children.
They can also put victims in touch with other agencies such as the police, solicitors or the council’s housing department and specialist support services.
In the Warrington area, the number to call for help is 01925 418430.
