Stunning victory for Town

WARRINGTON Town got back to winning ways with a stunning 2-3 victory at play-off chasing Colwyn Bay last night.
Town travelled to North Wales missing a large number of first team regulars and handed a starting debut to Connor Millington and a substitutes place to Sam Finley, both on loan from Southport.
With just one win in their last eight games and missing regulars Jimmy McCarthy and Phil Hadland alongside skipper Mike Tomlinson and new signing Mike Duffy, it looked set to be an uphill struggle for Town against a team sitting third in the league and pushing for the play-offs.
Both sides started slowly with the game taking place mainly in midfield, it took just under a quarter of an hour before either goalkeeper was called into action, Ben Connett denying Bay striker Neil Black with a good low save. Tony Evans had Town’s first chance, shooting straight at Bay keeper, Chris Sanna from the edge of the box, shortly afterwards the same player forced Sanna into a good low save as Town got into a good spell of possession. The home side were still dangerous and saw an effort ruled out for offside soon after. Town were indebted to Mike Grogan who produced a fine last gasp challenge to deny Black when through on goal. Bay went close to scoring in the 25th minute when Town central defender Levi Kennedy sliced his clearance against his own post and unbelievably winger Ian Sheridan put the rebound wide with the goal at his mercy. The game had now developed into a very entertaining affair, Bay winger Adriano Rigoglioso rounding Connett but being pushed wide and was unable to get a shot on target. Town had their chances too, Maltese under 21 international Richard Chetcuti forcing Sanna to save his effort with his feet and Chris Gahgan seeing his volley saved at full stretch by Sanna. Just when the half looked to be finishing goalless, Bay found a way through, Sheridan pouncing upon a slip by Louis Corrigan to run through and slot home beyond Connett.
Town began the second brightly and were level within five minutes, when striker Tony Evans scored his eleventh goal of the season, cutting past his defender on the edge of the box, before curling his shot past Sanna.
Just over a minute later Town were ahead, Gahgan picking up Corrigan’s pass and unleashing a vicious dipping drive from 25 yards that went over Sanna and crashed in off the underside of the crossbar. Bay went looking for an equaliser and Sheridan saw his angled shot go narrowly wide of the post.
Town almost wrapped the game up on the hour, when Salmon saw his shot smack away to safety off the upright. Colwyn Bay should have equalised in the 81st minute when substitute Anthony Sheehan capitalised on a poor goal kick by Connett, but seeing his weak effort go wide of the post when he only had the keeper to beat.
With seven minutes to go, Bay were awarded a penalty, despite the foul appearing to be outside of the penalty area. Sheridan stepped up and confidently dispatched the ball beyond Connett to bring the home side level. That was not the end of the drama as four minutes later, Town were awarded a penalty, Sanna and Evans colliding on the edge of the box, Evans appearing to get a touch before Sanna. Gahgan stepped up and smacked the ball high into the roof of the net to secure his 28th goal of the season and give the Town three much-needed points.
