DESPITE the best efforts of club officials, players and supporters
Warrington Town FC’s much anticipated match with FC Halifax Town has been postponed due to a frozen pitch.
Although a thaw has set in the pitch is still frozen solid with ice more than an inch thick on areas of the pitch.
Earlier in the week more than 20 volunteers spent several hours clearing tonnes of snow off the playing surface in a bid to get the league match on.
Chief Executive Gary Skentelbery said: “I would like to thank those people who gave up their free time to help clear the pitch – but it soon became clear we were fighting a losing battle.
“We have tried our best and given it a go and it was a good team bonding exercise.”
Team captain Mike Tomlinson was joined by other Warrington based players Chris Gahgan, Phil Hadland and Tony Evans and manager Joey Dunn, alongside groundsman John Barton, club directors, Volunteers from Eagle Sports and supporters to clear the pitch.
Warrington were keen to get Saturday’s game with Halifax on after having no action since December 12 and would have had their biggest gate of the season.
It is hoped the weather will thaw in time for their next scheduled game at home to Colwyn Bay a week on Saturday.
There will be a pitch inspection early next week to see if any more snow clearing is required.
