Jobs boost brings town new hope

IMPROVED job figures for Warrington could give cause for economic optimism, according to local business leaders.
The number of people claiming job seekers allowance (JSA) in Warrington fell by 209 between September and October to 4,822.
The figures, release by the Office of National Statistics/NOMIS, show the number of claimants is still 1,799 higher than this time last year but the lowest it has been since February.
Unemployment in Warrington still stands at 5.8 per cent – the highest it’s been for a decade – but the decline in the number of people signing on last month is a step in the right direction, says Ian Marks, (right) leader of Warrington Borough Council.
He said: “These latest figures are hopefully a sign of recovery for the local economy and evidence that Warrington is showing its resistance.
“Our key strength throughout the last few months and indeed years is the diversity of our economy, as we are not dependent on any one sector or industry.”
Results from a Chamber of Commerce economic survey indicated that the UK is on the brink of leaving the recession. Data from over 5,000 companies shows good progress in both the manufacturing and service sectors.
Colin Daniels, (left) Warrington Chamber chief executive said: “The prospects look good for Warrington and we’re hoping that the economic climate will start to improve now.
“Forty six of those new jobs were created with help from the Chamber through the ‘Maximising Opportunities in Warrington’ scheme, which aimed to help 18-24 year olds who had been unemployed for six months or more.
“The Chamber is actively involved in these types of project and is working with the local authority and other organisations to help improve employment in the town.”
