Prison officers walk out

WARRINGTON’S Risley Prison has been hit by a strike.
More than 150 members of the Prison Officer’s Association (POA) have walked out in sympathy with staff at Walton Jail in Liverpool where about 200 prison officers struck yesterday.
The stoppage is over concerns for the health and safety of prison officers in the event of staff cuts arising from a £1 million budget shortfall.
Governors are understood to be running the prison today and the strike could disrupt court appearances, prisoner release and visiting.
A POA spokesman said: “Staff has been cut over the last few years and we could not cope with any more cuts. But the only way to meet the shortfall is to cut staff.”
It is not known how long the strike will last.
