YOUNGSTERS in Warrington will be swapping magic beans for test tubes after a town council said: “Oh no you don’t!”to the annual free pantomime this year.
Instead of Jack and Beanstalk or Cinderella, Birchwood Town Council has asked four schools to each host a ‘Mad Science’ show next February.
The science displays, run by an external company, will feature live presentations, theatrical productions and hand on experiments to spark the imagination.
Pupils at Gorse Covert, Locking Stumps, Birchwood C of E and Fox Wood schools will all have the chance to take part in the shows, which tie in with some of the Key Stage 2 Science curriculum.
Birchwood Town Council has organised a Christmas pantomime for local children for over a decade now but falling attendance and calendar clashes with other festive events in the area made them re-think this year.
Fiona McDonald, Birchwood Town Council Clerk, said: “This doesn’t mean we won’t hold a pantomime ever again. We’re just trying something different this year.
“We looked at puppet shows and discos but the science shows are more interactive than a pantomime and will hopefully be just as much fun.
“Around 1,000 children in Birchwood will be able to take part –almost double the audience we could fit in the pantomime venue.
“Some schools have hosted events like this before and the children have loved them, so we think they’ll go down well. Also it gives the children something to look forward to after Christmas.”
The four Mad Science shows will be more expensive than putting on one pantomime. Frontis, the local housing association, has stepped in to share the costs.
