Police warning on bonfire safety

PEOPLE in Warrington are being urged to take extra care with fireworks and bonfires – and to attend official displays if possible.
Police and Fire chiefs are working together to promote safety in the run-up to Bonfire Night.
Anti-social behaviour, youth nuisance, criminal damage and illegal fires increase at this time of year. Residents are warned to be on their guard and report any incidents.
Police will be carrying out special patrols and ensuring that bonfires and fireworks are used safely, and that fireworks are sold within the law.
They say anyone who breaks the rules can be fined, have items confiscated or be taken to court.
Chief Inspector Jon Ward said: “We would urge people to be sensible over the Bonfire Night period and to not cause a nuisance – think about the potential impact of your behaviour on local residents.”
Terry McDermott, of Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We are all working together to keep people safe and make sure an exciting and enjoyable period is not tarnished by an increase in anti-social behaviour and nuisance fires.
“I would also urge residents to take extra care with candles, fireworks and lights which are also popular at this time of year and potential fire risks.”
Parents in Warrington are being urged to take children to an organised firework display, and not to let youngsters play with fireworks which is dangerous and illegal.
People are advised to lock their wheelie bin away so that it is not a fire target, keep pets indoors and be careful with candles and lanterns.
