WARRINGTON Town secured three valuable points with a hard earned 1-0 victory over Woodley Sports following a 25 minute delay in proceedings following an injury to the referee.
It was the first time this season Warrington recorded back to back league wins and eased any fading relegation fears.
The game was less than five minutes old when the referee Mr Daniel Roberts limped off with a suspected snapped achilles tendon with Warrington’s match day secretary Chris Henshall subbing on the line after a 25 minute delay – his first time back in action after nearly 20 years in retirement.
In a scrappy first half the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Mark Haslam was sent off on 38 minutes for violent conduct.
Goal scoring chances were few and far between with Town’s Chris Gaghan firing wide with a long range effort and Mick O’Donnell seeing his shot pushed around the post by the keeper.
Striker Richard Chetcuti went close at the start of the second half but it was substitute Francis Smith who secured all three points firing home from a Gaghan cross on 77 minutes.
Ten minutes from time Gaghan cleared off the line as the visitors pushed for an equaliser and Town rode their luck in the closing stages as the visitors had two penalty appeals turned down.
After the match Town manager Joey Dunn said he had been pleased with the team performance and it had been a case of being patient and wearing the opposition down.
“I told the lads at half time that a chance would come – and it did. We just had to be patient and played some nice football.”
