Radcliffe Borough 4 Warrington Town 1 (AET)
THE Wire travelled to Radcliffe Borough for new boss Paul Moores’ second game in charge in the Uni Bond Challenge Cup.
Town handed a debut to on loan Macclesfield defender Matthew Flynn and gave a start to Chris Brown from the reserves who impressed on Saturday.
Radcliffe came out of the traps quicker than Town and had the majority of the early chances, but poor finishing and good defending kept the scores level.
As Town settled they came into the game more, and Phil Mitchell was denied by Keeper Lake, after being put through by strike partner Lee Thompson.
From the resulting corner Town took the lead as Mike Ellison struck a fine volley from the edge of the box.
The rest of the first half fizzled away after that and The Wire went into the half time break a goal to the good.
There were promising signs coming from Town at the beginning of the second half and Chris Moores could have doubled their advantage, but blasted his shot over the bar.
Taylor then went close for The Wire, forcing a save out of Lake in Radcliffe goal following nice inter play.
The home side started to find their feet soon after and came right back into the contest.
They would have drawn level, but for an excellent save from Danny Morton in the 65th minute.
Pressure was mounting on Town who had Matty Elder to thank for keeping them in front when he cleared off the line.
For all Radcliffe’s pressure, it seemed as if Town were going to hold on for a first under their new manager, but in the 89th minute, midfielder Lee Connell beat Morton with a good strike to send the game into extra time.
Six minutes into extra the home side took the lead when Ben Manning fished well after a mazy run.
Town were now looking out of it, and in the second period of extra time, the home side punished them twice more, firstly substitute Gary Sampson got on the end of a cross to beat Morton and with barely five minutes to go, striker Steve Howson, scored again to compound Town’s misery.

  • Town: Morton, Salt, Fitzsimmons, Elder, Flynn, Ellison, P. Mitchell, Brown, Taylor (G.Mitchell, 86), Thompson (Moores, 30), Hannon, (Latham, 70)
