Fleetwood Town 7 Warrington Town 3
WARRINGTON Town were emphatically dumped out of the League Challenge Cup, as they were thrashed 7-3 by high flying Fleetwood Town.
Town, who were missing five players from Saturday’s defeat at Grantham, started the game slowly, with Uni Bond Premier Division outfit Fleetwood making all the early chance.
Indeed it was the home side who took the lead in the ninth minute, when winger Richie Allen beat Danny Morton to a cross and tapped in to the unguarded net.
Again Fleetwood were surging forward in search of another goal, but it was The Wire who managed to draw things level against the run of play, when makeshift striker Matty Elder arrowed a low dive into the far corner.
This failed to deter Fleetwood who kept the pressure on Warrington’s defence and would have taken the lead, but for a goal line clearance from defender Tony Dunn.
Eventually their pressure told in the 31st minute when substitute Ciaran Donnelly curled a free kick into the bottom corner.
A minute later it was 3-1 as striker Phil Denney met a cross to thump the ball past Morton.
Fleetwood were in the ascendancy and promptly scored a fourth two minutes later when Peter Wright finished a fine move with a low drive into the corner.
It was one way traffic by this point and Fleetwood notched a fifth goal when Wright out jumped Morton to bag his second of the game.
A final blow was delivered to The Wire on the stroke of half as Donnelly rose to head in a corner.
Thankfully, Warrington started the second half much better and possession was evenly matched.
Fleetwood defender Sean Grey handled in the area, with Phil Mitchell finding the net from the spot.
Morton was forced in to more saves before Fleetwood notched their seventh, when Wright completed his hat trick by heading home unchallenged from a corner.
Graeme Mitchell came off the bench and scored late on to cap what was a miserable night for The Wire.
Town’s next game is on December 1 when they take on Carlton Town at Cantilever Park.
