THIEVES have got away with lead worth about £7,000 from the roof of a Warrington town centre community centre.
Police are appealing for information from the public about the raid which has caused extensive damage to the Gateway Centre in Sankey Street.
The theft is thought to have taken place some time in the last week when the centre was closed.
A police spokesman said today: "Sometime after the August 10, when the Gateway Centre had closed, thieves gained access to the roof via the scaffolding around the building and stole new lead work.
"The value of the stolen metal is estimated at around £7000. The Police are urging anyone who may have seen anything suspicious, or anyone who can offer any information, to contact Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000."
PCSO John Pitchford said: "The Gateway serves as a bridge between the local community, public services, and community organisations. It provides a much needed place for people from different backgrounds to engage and interact, and this mindless, selfish act will greatly impact on those who use the facility"

Easy pickings if there was scafolding there. With the scrap price for lead being so good is there any wonder 'certain' theiving sods are just helping themselves to it from buildings & churches etc. And no doubt once it is replaced it will be taken again. Surely there is an alternative to lead these days which would be of no value at all to thieves. Personally though I'd rather see them caught and have their hands chopped off.
