Wolves slam not so mighty Quins

Wolves 58 Harlequins 0

WINGER Chris Riley ran in five tries – just one short of a Super League record – as Wolves started their campaign in the best possible way with a 58-0 win over Harlequins at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.
In all, Wolves scored 11 tries with the Quins completely outclassed.
It was sweet revenge for Tony Smith for the 60-8 hammering the Quins handed out to him in his second match in charge of Wolves last March.
Afterwards, Smith praised Riley for his five tries – a Super League record for Wolves.
He said: “A few were served up on a silver platter but a winger has to be there and he showed good speed.”
Wolves started the match in fine style and had a 12-point lead after only seven minutes. By half-time they led 28-0.
Skipper Adrian Morley led the pack superbly – particularly as he had only had an hour’s sleep as he had spent the night at the birth of his second child – a daughter.
Quins were without half-a-dozen key players but, even so, looked very second rate.
Wolves gave Richie Myler, Ryan Atkins and David Solomona their debuts but were missing the injured Chris Hicks and Jon Clarke.
Myler took only three minutes to make an impact when his smart inside pass allowed Carvell to charge over and Lee Briers added the conversion.
Richie Mathers picked up the second try and Michael Monaghan picked up the third after a quick tap penalty.
Chris Bridge was next to score, bursting through from dummy-half.
Riley ran in his first to make it 28-0, although Briers missed the conversion.
Warrington added more pressure after the interval with Riley going over again after 47 minutes.
He took his tally to four in 14 minutes and then Myler added another to take the lead 48-0.
Riley’s fifth try came after 65 minutes and then Simon Grix went over to complete the rout. Myler had a late effort disallowed for a forward pass.
Smith said Myler had been unlucky on several occasions and he was pleased with the way the former Salford player had fitted in.
