WARRINGTON Wolves’ latest new recruit could be creating history as the first player to represent his home town club at soccer and Rugby League!
Mike Stewart is believed to be the first player to have represented Warrington Town FC and Warrington Wolves.
Mike was a regular at full-back for Warrington Town last season before hanging up his football boots to concentrate on Rugby League with Bank Quay Bulls.
Now Mike, who was on Everton’s books as a youngster and former Bulls team mate Jamie Peasnell have been signed by the Wolves.
The Wolves have once again shown their commitment to investing in the future by signing the two local youngsters.
Both are local lads and played in the youth teams last season.
Mike and Jamie joined the Club during the 2009 season on terms and conditions contract and earned part-time contracts for the 2010 season on performance and application. They both have potential to achieve much more in the game and develop into talented young players.
This will only be achieved if they dedicate and commit themselves to the training programme and perform consistently on the football field.
John Bastian, Director of Youth Development, said: “Young players need to make many sacrifices to gain the rewards of representing the first grade team. This is achievable through hard work and endeavour, and enjoying the experience as we progress. I would like to thank Bank Quay Bulls for the time and effort they have put in to Jamie and Mike, and hopefully they will prove to be just as successful at Warrington Wolves.”
Chairman at Bank Quay Bulls Andy Stephens says that this is a great achievement for the local club. “We have only been going for 11 years so to see both sign together is a massive achievement for the Club, and will hopefully be the start of many…What stands out in these two players is their attitude; they are hard working, honest boys.”
Richard Marshall, Coach of under 20s, added: “Both lads are good professionals and played for us part way through last season. We are now hoping for them to kick on and establish themselves in the under 20s next season. Both have a lot of potential and if they work hard in pre-season they will look to start the season with us.”
As players both Mike and Jamie have aspirations and goals for their future at Warrington.
Mike knows that he needs desire, determination and dedication to achieve his goals. “I will have to put in a lot of hard work and effort. I played last season and my aim is to establish myself in the under 20s and then kick on to the first team. I need to impress Rich, John and after them Tony. This is a big thing in a short space of time for me.”
Pictures show Mike in action for Warrington Town last season and for the Wolves Academy team.
