WARRINGTON Head of Coaching Tony Smith is gambling on youth ahead of experience after naming his starting 17 to face Huddersfield Giants with a shock call up for young graduate Tyrone McCarthy.
Kiwi Prop Paul Rauhihi misses out on ending his Warrington career with a Wembley bow as Smith has favoured last season’s reserve player of the year McCarthy (pictured right), who will be featuring in just his third senior game!
Another surprise is the selection of loose forward Vinnie Anderson at stand-off with Aussie half-back Michael Monaghan starting at hooker.
But the starting positions will mean nothing as Smith will tactically switch Monaghan around th epitch as he did with great success against Wigan in the semi-final victory at Widnes.
It will be a huge disappointment for Rauhihi who will be ending a four year stint with the Wolves at the end of the season.
He had hoped for another contract extension earlier in the year but was then struck by injury and although he featured in last weeks defeat by Wakefield it was not one of his better performance.
Another shock is the inclusion of the experienced Micky Higham on the bench, after missing the past three months with a torn bicep. But Jon Clarke’s omission with an ankle injury made it an easy choice for Smith.
But all eyes will be on the young McCarthy, who watched the semi-final victory from the stands with his mates!
The Wolves Reserves star graduated from Edge Hill University with a 2:1 in Sports and Physical Education in July this year. Tyrone, 21, has been playing for the Wolves since the age of 16 and was voted Reserves Player of the Year last season. He has also had success with the student teams for Great Britain and Ireland.
