AS WARRINGTON Wolves prepare for their biggest game in nearly two decades their footballing neighbours Warrington Town embark on the road to Wembley by taking on Leigh Genesis in the FA Cup at Cantilever Park this Friday, kick off 7.45pm.
Town have switched the game to Friday evening to give their supporters the chance to get behind the Wolves at Wembley on Saturday when they take on Huddersfield Giants in the Challenge Cup Final.
To mark the occasion Town are inviting Wolves season ticket and Challenge Cup ticket holders half price admission (£3.50) for their FA Cup clash with arch rivals Leigh as part of a Wembley weekender promotion. Leigh rugby season ticket holders can also gain half price admission.
With all youngsters aged under 16 also gaining free admission when accompanied by an adult, Town are hoping for a bumper crowd to cheer them on in the world’s most famous cup competition.
Warrington have never reached the first round proper of the FA Cup, the nearest they have ever got being a 4th qualifying round replay in the early 1990’s.
Friday’s clash is the first preliminary round, with Warrington having to win at least eight games to just reach the first round proper which is a big ask for a team from the Unibond First Division North.
But after getting their season back on track with a hard earned 1-0 home victory over Wakefield, manager Joey Dunn is confident his team can cause a bit of a cup upset, with their near neighbours, managed by former Man City star Gary Flitcroft, being relegated from the Unibond Premier last season.
The two teams will clash again next Tuesday evening in the league, in a game which has had to be moved from Leigh’s stadium on Bank Holiday Monday due to a rugby fixture. The game has been switched to Chorley, kick off 7.45pm.
