Wolves overcome adversity for Giant win

WARRINGTON Wolves over came adversity to leap frog table topping Huddersfield Giants to go top of Super League with a hard fought 22-32 victory at the Galpharm Stadium.
But the victory came at a price as Ben Harrison and Simon Grix both suffered serious injuries early in the first half.
Winger Chris Riley gave the Wolves a flying start as he went int he corner in the first minute but Danny Brough hit back for the Giants in the 16th minute, converting his own try to make it 6.-4 to the home side.
Eorl Crabtree marked his 300th appearance with a try, converted by Brough to make it 12-4 to the home side but tries from Riley and Chris Bridge just before the break, with one Briers conversion gave the Wolves a slender 12-14 lead at the break.
But three minutes after the re-start the Giants were back in front as Chan touched down. Back came Warrington with tries from Joel Monghan and Matty Blythe, both converted by Briers to make it 16-26 for the Wolves.
But the Giants refused to surrender and Eden touched down on the hour with Brough’s conversion narrowing the gap to just four points.
Seven minutes from time Richie Myler secured the victory for Warrington as he went in under the sticks after backing up Ratchford who collected a loose ball which had been stripped from Ben Westwood’s grasp. Briers added the extras.
After the match Head of Coaching Tony Smith praised his team for overcoming adversity and digging deep.
“I am really proud of the lads. We lost two boys early on which made it very tough for us against a very strong Huddersfield team.”
Harrison suffered a suspected ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and could be out for the rest opf the season, while Simon Grix is likely to be out for several weeks with a medial ligament injury.
