Third time lucky for controversial housing plan?

A CONTROVERSIAL plan for 66 houses on the site of a former school will be back before Warrington planning chiefs for a third time next week.
The scheme involves the site of the former St Oliver Plunkett RC Primary School at Birchwood and it has been held up because of issues over a proposed pedestrian crossing in Admirals Road.
Members of the borough council’s development management committee have twice deferred a decision on similar grounds.
Birchwood Town Council has lodged an objection to the project.
The school closed in 2003 and site is now mostly grassland, with a number of trees and some hardstanding.
The developers hope to build 32 two bedroom terraced properties, eight two bedroom semi-detached, 23 three bedroom semi-detached, two three bedroom terraced properties and one three bedroom detached house.  All would be of two storeys and a play area is included in the blueprint.
Birchwood Town Council says a pedestrian crossing should be installed on Admirals Road to ensure a safe route to Birchwood High School.

  1. It’s easy to see how the inclusion of a play area would be a selling point for developers but who will be paying the long term maintenance?
Surely this is not going to become a drain on the public purse?
There are areas in Warrington with thousands of houses and no playground – any public funding should be focused on these areas first.
