150 candidates to fight for 58 seats in council elections

MORE than 150 candidates will contest 58 seats in the all-out elections for Warrington Borough Council on May 5.
No party is contesting every seat but Labour, with 52, is fielding the largest number of candidates.
The Conservatives are fielding 45 and the Liberal Democrats 36, with the Green Party putting forward six.
The election is the first to take place since the boundary changes forced through by the Local Government Boundaries Commission against strong local opposition.   The council has now one additional seat, but the Hatton, Stretton and Walton ward has disappeared.
Labour will have three former party members opposing them – two as independents at Rixton and Woolston and one – the controversial councillor Kevin Bennett – representing the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC).
TUSC is fielding five other candidates and – possibly reflecting the fact that Warrington was recently named as the seventh most Euro-sceptic borough in the country – there are nine UK Independence Party candidates.
