Ten man Warrington Town grind out valuable win

VIDEO: TEN man Warrington Town showed their true title credentials as they ground out a valuable 1-0 victory over third placed Ossett Albion at the Winner Recruitment Stadium.

Victory saw Warrington in their first game since the departure of manager Shaun Reid, maintain an eight point gap over Northwich Victoria at the top of the Evo-Stik Division One North, with their only real title rivals thumping Droylsden, Town’s next opponents, 8-2.

New signing Gerard Kinsella started for the Yellows with fellow new signing Michael Lea on the bench.

It was backs to the wall for Town for much of the last 30 minutes after skipper Ciaran Kilheeney was dismissed for a second bookable offence for alleged diving, after he had already been given a yellow card for dissent.

New management duo Stuart Mellish and Lee Smith will have been delighted with Warrington’s defensive strength and the three points in a scrappy game which saw six bookings.

With little goal mouth action in the first half Warrington struck the bar in the 20th minute.

The only goal of the game came on 33 minutes when Danny Ventre’s in swinging corner was fumbled into the net by the Ossett Albion keeper.

Just before the break Ben Deegan had a chance but headed straight into the arms of the keeper.

Chances were few and far between for Warrington and when Kilheeney was dismissed on 66 minutes it was pretty much backs to the wall.

Ossett did get the ball into the back of the net on 80 minute’s but it was courtesy of Frost’s hand, who saw yellow for his sins.

The final 10 minutes plus stoppage saw Warrington’s defensive qualities fully tested as they hung on for all three points.
