Schools to link for Jubilee

SIX schools at Warrington are to link up to provide a lasting celebration of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.
More than 2,000 children from the schools, at Appleton and Stockton Heath, will contribute to works of art to be prominently displayed in their grounds to make up a “Jubilee trail” through the two villages.
The schools are Appleton Thorn Primary, Cobbs Infant, Broomfields Junior, Stockton Heath Primary, St Thomas’s CE Primary and St Monica’s RC Primary.
Teacher Sandra Harris, who is deputy chairman of Appleton Parish Council, is leading the initiative, which also has the backing of Stockton Heath Parish Council.
She said: “We hope the project will fully engage the children, linking the schools and producing permanent, or semi-permanent works of art at each school.
“People will be able to follow the trail around, from school to school – and each school will represent a decade of the Queen’s reign.
“Drawings will be produced at each school and then handed over to a chainsaw artist who will work from the drawings to produce a carving in oak.
“The schools are overwhelmingly in support of the idea.”
The project will last until October and will involve pupils, parents, PTAs, teaching staff, parish councils and the wider community.
It is estimated the carvings will last for up to 10 years, and possibly longer.
