FIREFIGHTERS were called out to help a farmer tackle a blaze which is believed to have been started deliberately at Burtonwood.
Two Fire crews from Warrington and Birchwood were called to assist a farmer dealing with a large amount of grass, mud and manure that was on fire on a field at Old Alder Lane, Burtonwood at 10:23 on Friday.
Around 100 tonnes had caught alight and the farmer was using his digger to separate the manure and soil out so that they could hose it own with a main jet.
The crews set up a water shuttle supply and used a nearby hydrant to give them additional water to tackle the fire. Stack drag rakes were also used by firefighters to spread the materials out for hosing. A relief crew from Penketh joined the effort after around four hours, with two main jets established to fully extinguish the flames.
The fire was fully out after around seven hours. Police colleagues were contacted due it being a suspected deliberate ignition. Anyone with information is asked to call 101, quotient IML 679116.
In another incident yesterday firefighters from Lymm attended reports of a wheelie bin on fire at a house on Hertford Close at 12:21. The fire was out on arrival, but the smoke and heat had caused damage to the exterior gable wall, so they damped
down with a hose reel and used a thermal imaging camera to check if the fire had spread. It had also spread to the garden shed, so the electrical feed to it was isolated as a precaution.
Firefighters from Stockton Heath were also called to deal with a fire on the embankment of the Bridgewater Canal at Stockton Lane, Grappenhall shortly after 17:00, which measured around 40 square metres.
They used a single hose reel to extinguish the flames, and remained for a further 20 minutes to damp down and check for hotspots.
