Big turn out expected at “Save the Raven” meeting

CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save the Raven Inn at Glazebury are expecting a big turn out at a public meeting ahead of a crucial six-month period in the pub’s history.
The meeting is at Culcheth High School on Thursday next week (September 5) at 7pm.
Spokesman Peter Sturman said: “We are looking forward to meeting members of our local community at the meeting.
“It is undoubtedly an important period in the fight to save the Raven. We are looking forward to bringing everyone up to speed and, more importantly getting their views.
“One thing that has not changed is that we are in this for the long term. The primary objective of ‘Saving the Raven’ remains uppermost.
“We truly believe that making the Raven a community pub is the best way to ensure it is preserved for future generations.
“There may be other options but we will vehemently oppose anything that could lead to the eventual demolition or change of use of the Raven.”
The campaigners have already succeeded in getting the Raven designated as an Asset of Community Value (ACV), persuaded a potential developer to withdraw proposals that could have seen the 450-year-old building demolished and seen the pub go on the open market.
But the ACV only gives them six months to move on to the next stage – raising enough money to buy the pub.
Next week’s meeting will give local residents the latest information about the campaign – including a proposed community share issue.
Mr Sturman added: “We will outline the way forward and answer any questions anyone may have.”
