Albion return to winning ways

LATCHFORD Albion returned to winning ways with a hard fought 17-6 victory over a resilient Hindley side at the Victoria Park Arena last night.
It was the visitors who started the strongest, and applied pressure to the Albion line. Following a repeat set the pressure told when they crossed near the posts and added the conversion to open the scoring.
The hosts rallied back and on 20 minutes the score was level. Following an initial break from the impressive Jack  Probert,  Albion held good field position which allowed loose forward and captain Danny Brown (pictured) to take on the visitors line. He used his strength to twist in the tackle and ground the ball, Alex Davies adding the conversion.
With neither team troubling the scoreboard further at half time the game was finely poised at 6-6.
In contrast to the first half, the hosts started strongly and on 50 minutes they took the lead for the first time when the ball was quickly moved across the line allowing wing Matthew Nash the space to acrobatically dive in at the corner.
The next score was to be pivotal and fortunately for Albion it was they who increased the lead when hooker Dave Yii spotted a gap in the Hindley line to dummy his way over near the posts, Davies converting.
With Chris Griffiths and Jack Phillips now controlling the game the pressure continued denying Hindley any way back into the game and a late Sam Dobson drop goal settled matters further and Albion ran out deserved winners.
Coach Martyn Ellis praised the Albion defence which held firm for 75 minutes after conceding an early try and for playing the last 20 minutes without any available substitutes following injuries sustained during a tough encounter.
Next Saturday (May 11) Latchford have a further home fixture when they entertain Haresfinch with a 2.30pm kick off
