A FEMALE choir will perform a selection of songs, using British Sign Language and vocals, at a charity Summer Fayre event in Birchwood on Sunday July 17.

Drawn from many different groups and communities, the girls will gather together to perform songs from the hit musical, The Girls, by Gary Barlow and Tim Firth, to raise funds and awareness for the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) and Bloodwise.

Organiser Helen Andrews said: “Earlier this year I went to watch The Girls The Musical written by Tim Firth and Gary Barlow. It was amazing on so many levels. We laughed, we cried, we cried from laughing It’s based on the true story of the Calendar Girls.

“As always when I visit the theatre I watch a BSL (British Sign Language) interpreted performance.

“The cast, the storyline, the music, the sign language, the whole experience was superb. Ideas began forming in my head.

“By the time I’d returned to my car I had decided on a fundraising event. This idea has grown.

“It is now a female community choir performing twice in the afternoon alongside a summer fair. WE have approximately 35 ladies taking part, most of who will be signing the songs.

“Some ladies and children have been signing for years; others had a crash course and learned the songs for the event. I am extremely proud of them all.

“I am looking for more ladies to join in and support us by singing the songs to increase the volume. There is still time to learn!

“Also donations to our tombola, raffle and ‘All Things Bright and Sunflower’ stall would be greatly appreciated.”

The combined event of a female community choir performance and a summer fayre takes place on Sunday July 17 from 12-3pm, with performances at 12.15 and 2pm.

It will be held at Birchwood Sports Hall, Benson Road, Birchwood, WA3 7PQ.

Tickets are priced £2 for adults, £1 for children and £5 for a family ticket.
