Wolves right to end e-cigarette partnership

CONGRATULATIONS to Warrington Wolves on ending their controversial partnership with an e-cigarette company.

Sponsors are the lifeblood of sports clubs but with the Wolves’ links with health and wellbeing, the partnership was always going to be a difficult one to manage.

While “vaping” is considered by many to be healthier than smoking cigarettes, there are still conflicting reports on possible side effects and long term implications from the use of e-cigarettes.

It also makes life extremely difficult for stewards to police a no smoking stadium, as puffs of vapour look just the same as puffs of smoke.

Actively promoting e-cigarettes and selling branded ones in the club shop was never a good decision at a club which does so much good work in the local community promoting health and wellbeing.

The Wolves do a lot of great work in the local community, especially through the Warrington Wolves Foundation – and we are delighted to showcase their ongoing work in this month’s issue of warrington-worldwide magazine through their annual Impact work.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the other sporting code at Warrington Town, who have had a fantastic season in the league and are just a few games away from securing promotion.

With nearest rivals Northwich Victoria having nine points deducted for fielding an ineligible player Warrington look to have been handed the title on a plate – but with the “Vics” appealing against the decision, there is no room for complacency .

While the decision to part company with manager Shaun Reid shocked many people at the time, it has done nothing to de-rail the promotion train, with the club continuing to break records.

As a director at the club I can testify that an awful lot of hard work has gone into delivering a team capable of promotion and it is fantastic to see the people of Warrington getting behind the team in ever increasing numbers.

Let’s hope Chairman Toby Macormac and everyone who has worked so hard at the club over many years can celebrate the promotion party they deserve come the end of the season.
